After realizing that social networking website launched by them as a imitation of Digg is a total loss Netscape AOL has finally decided to transfer social news to a website named propeller.com. Though Netscape claims that they are doing this because of feedback of users which says that they like Netscape as a more traditional and editorially-driven news experience. It is much like shifting all the passengers from a sinking ship to an newly furnished Island. When they introduced social news on Netscape.com Aol thought that it will dominate digg.com and would be one of the most active news website. It got more popularity than the likes of Reddit, Newsvine, Slashdot, and Ma.gnolia. Netscape was on Internet even before I knew what is Internet. Still a copy of anything is doomed to fail unless it is marketed by Microsoft and offered millions of fake awards. (read: Microsoft games).
In a statement, Tom Drapeau said that AOL was “working hard behind the scenes to ensure a smooth transition before we officially launch at this new destination,” which given the site isn’t live yet is code for we eventually found a spare domain to rid ourselves of our Digg clone.
What I want to see is how much innovative will be Netscape’s newly propelled, assumed to be just another Digg clone. I wonder how this post sounds. To some it might sound like I am supporting Netscape and to others it might sound like a Digg support. When I compare both of them.. Digg has much more number of users than Netscape on other hand Netscape had higher PR than Digg and news is moderated by editors. I just hope propeller shouldn’t be just another “refined clone” of Digg.
